Art Toronto 2012, the 13th edition of the Toronto International Art Fair, will take place October 26 to 29 in downtown Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. As Canada’s only international art fair, Art Toronto is widely acknowledged as an essential platform for networking in the Canadian visual arts community by bringing together collectors, curators, artists and galleries from across Canada and around the world.

For the 2012 installation, Art Toronto has turned its attention to the diverse contemporary art scene of Asia. In addition to the over 120 galleries from Europe, the United States, Australia and Canada, Art Toronto will feature 13 established and emerging galleries in Focus ASIA, a section devoted specifically to contemporary Asian art.

A dynamic and engaging educational program will complement the gallery section and be comprised of a comprehensive offering of talks, tours, panel discussions and presentations from national and international speakers including Shengtian Zheng, Managing Editor Yishu; Katherine Don, Director RedBox Studio Beijing; independent curator Biljana Ciric; Richard Rhodes, Editor Canadian Art magazine; David Silcox, President Sotheby’s Canada; Robin Anthony, Curator for RBC; Gerald McMaster, Curator Canadian Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario; David Liss, Artistic Director of MOCCA; artist Ed Pien and visual arts journalist Sara Angel. 

In addition, this year’s ever-popular Power Talks, organized by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, returns with Philip Tinari, Director of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Angeline Scherf, Chief Curator of ARC/Musée D’Art Moderne, Paris and Nigel Prince, Executive Director of the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver. 

Art Toronto 2012′s curated exhibition Beyond Geography is a selection of artwork that responds to Art Toronto’s Focus ASIA initiative and includes thought-provoking installations and video works that illustrate the hybrid expressions of multiple cultures or fusion of universal themes. The exhibition features 8 video installations including The Village and Elsewhere series by Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook; Writing in the Rain by FX Harsono; Growing Pains by Rutherford Chang; One by One by Kan Xuan; War of Java byJompet Kuswidananto; Ons Aller Belang by Tromarama; and Beyond Geography by Li Ran.  In addition, the exhibition will feature the monumental work on paper Untitled 2008-2011(the Map of the Land of Feeling) by Rirkrit Tiravanija, wall sculptures from the Surfboard series by Tomas Vu Daniel, the book of yellow by Sarindar Dhaliwal, Xiaojing Yan’s Cloudscape and the Anonymity lightbox series by Poklong Anading.
