HERE SHE COMES NOW
March 9–June 23, 2013
Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden
Lichtentaler Allee 8a
76530 Baden-Baden
Germany
From March 9 on, artworks of New York-based painter Elizabeth Peyton are on display at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. HERE SHE COMES NOW is the title of the exhibition for which the artist has chosen to show a specific selection of works: Exclusively and for the first time ever in this combination, portraits of musicians are on view in Baden-Baden. The exhibition includes pictures of David Bowie, Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Julian Casablancas, Jonas Kaufmann and Waltraud Meier. These portraits attest to Peyton’s intensive examination of a most vulnerable but at the same time pivotal moment in the process of artistic creation: singers in the act of performing.
HERE SHE COMES NOW will present 30 oil paintings and works on paper from the last 20 years. The vast majority of the exhibit are parts of private American collections and have rarely or not at all been shown in Germany.
In addition to that, Elizabeth Peyton will, for the first time, show a number of photographs—instant shots depicting live events—that are the point of departure for most of her works. These images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog alongside respective paintings by the artist.
Elizabeth Peyton, born 1965 in Danbury, Connecticut, completed her studies at the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1987. Her exhibition at New York’s Chelsea Hotel in 1993 marks the beginning of her international career. Since then, her works have been exhibited at many prestigious art institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1997); and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2008). Elizabeth Peyton is Brenner’s Artist in Residence 2013.
