Leonor Fini: Pourquoi Pas?
Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was a recognised artist and personality in Europe’s cultural life in the mid-twentieth century. Her work challenged conventional ideas through questioning the frontiers between female and male, myth and reality, the conscious and unconscious. Fini demonstratively followed her own path and her work is characterised by a radical, consequential and individual approach. 

Leonor Finis’s many-sided oeuvre is now presented for the first time in the Nordic countries. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, book illustrations, objects, text and costume sketches for theatre and opera.

The exhibition is produced by Bildmuseet with the support of Umeå2014, a key stakeholder in the city’s European Capital of Culture year.

Thilo Frank

Thilo Frank’s poetic and playful installations present the viewer with an opportunity to explore light, space and movement. The room installation The Phoenix is closer than it appears invites viewers to physically take part. The title of the newly produced site-specific work Circumpolar Lantern refers to celestial objects that never sets below the horizon. 

Andreas Johansson: Place Position
January 19–February 16

Andreas Johansson has created a new work for Bildmuseet: a scenery in large-scale format. This illusory three-dimensional landscape depict a dilapidated, rundown and abandoned area from his immediate surrounding. By cutting photographs apart and re-assembling them, he creates new fictitious places—inaccessible, secretive environments existing somewhere between dream and reality.

Katarina Pirak Sikku: Nammaláhpán 
January 31–April 20

Can sorrow be inherited? Artist Katarina Pirak Sikku asked herself while looking into the studies of Sami people undertaken by Sweden’s State Institute for Race Biology during the first half of the twentieth century. At Bildmuseet she presents her artistic configuration of this material as drawings, photographs, paintings, installations and texts.
